What Will Humans Do When AI Robots Do Everything?
Mastering the threat and promise of artificial intelligence
It’s 2100.
No one suffers need because everyone gets a universal living income (and interest and land-lording have been banned long ago because they refused to stop raising prices to absorb all that extra income.)
Plus, everyone has a personal AI robot.
Your robot is your life assistant.Â
It…
orders your groceries based on your nutritional specifications to maximize healthspan based on your genotype
cooks your meals (unless you want to cook for pure pleasure, in which case it can train you to become a world-class chef in any cuisine)
makes you go to the gym where it acts as your personal trainer so you reach peak health and looksmaxxing
it gives you a post-workout massage, osteopathic adjustment, or chiropractic realignment, and periodically scans your body for possible cancers, tumors, or other health risks
while you nap, it cleans the house, cuts the grass, and does property maintenance (or builds you a new home based on a floorplan you design together in virtual reality)
when you want to get together and/or travel with friends or family, your life assistant liaises with their life assistant and figures out the optimal time, place, and route
when you want to go out with friends, it custom-tailors a new bespoke outfit in minutes
when you want to go somewhere, your life assistant orders you an autonomous hover cab, drone taxi, or hyperloop train car to get you there
If you want to watch a movie or read a novel on your commute, it can curate from an unlimited selection of films and books or simply create a new one in real-time
while you sleep, it does the dishes and laundry
The best part?Â
Democratic algorithms ran the numbers decades ago and figured out how to deliver maximum well-being to all… within the context of environmental sustainability.Â
Energy is free thanks to wave power, tidal power, wind power, solar power, small modular nuclear, geothermal, and hydropower.
Organic food and clothing are free thanks to outdoor, natural, soil-improving, air-cleaning, robot-farmed, semi-wild food jungles
Houses are free, obviously, because rocks and trees belong to everybody
Welcome to guilt-free regenerative consumption.
This is the world that AI technology could realistically deliver.
The question is:
How do we make it happen?
And what will humans do with themselves when human work is no longer required for survival?
Five brief points:
First.
We must recognize that the stakes are unfathomably high.
If we get this wrong, things will go sideways incredibly fast.
Scenario A: Depression
Widespread joblessness and homelessness for billions.
Scenario B: Subjugation
If we aren’t aggressively vigilant, the enemies of democratic freedom (globalist finance, Russia, China, Islamic radicalism, etc) will dominate AI technology and weaponize it to turn humanity into serf colonies. (Think: Robot soldiers and robodogs policing the streets, social credit systems, 24/7 biometric monitoring, etc)
Scenario C: Annihilation
At its very worst, AI armies could simply wipe out ethnic groups, religious groups, entire nations, or all of humanity.
So, first and foremost, we need to ensure that all global AI technology exists to serve and protect humanity.
This is paramount.Â
This is a non-negotiable.Â
All AI projects currently in development that don’t meet a global democratic standard of pro-humanness must be reformed or shut down immediately.
There must be no exceptions to the pro-humanity rule.
Second.
Every nation must start a democratic AI ministry/department with an AI minister/secretary immediately.
AI has the potential to amass colossal amounts of power in appallingly few hands, so it is vital that democracies take the lead on this.
We need every member of our global family to have a seat at this bounteous table.
We must also change our language.Â
We are not aiming for an AI-run world. We are aiming for a human democracy with AI assistance.Â
Technologies must serve humans, not the other way around.
Third.
Democracy must invest MASSIVELY in publicly-owned AI so the public can share in its benefits or we are absolutely screwed.
Through a decentralized network of sovereign wealth funds at local, city, county, state, national, regional, continental, and global levels, the commons must own vast amounts of democratically-owned AI in order to spread the benefits to everyone.Â
These sovereign wealth funds should invest in:
AI hyper-factories that build 1,000-year houses at world-beating prices
AI hyper-factories that build wave generators, tidal harvesters, wind turbines, solar panels, small modular reactors, geothermal generators, and hydro turbines.
AI hyper-factories that build all sorts of transportation — hyperloop trains, hover cabs, drone taxis, nuclear submarines and ocean liners, etc.
AI hyper-factories that craft 1,000-year furniture from sustainably harvested forests
AI hyper-factories for making 1,000-mile footwear and decades-lasting clothing
AI outdoor farms that sustainably and regeneratively grow organic healthy food and deliver it straight to your doorstep
Fourth.
AI will eventually render all commerce or money useless and nonsensical, but during that transition period, we must tax all AI owners — both publicly owned and private shareholders — to fund a Universal Living Income so that all humans can comfortably meet their needs.
Doing so will not only prevent billions from suffering unnecessary poverty and pain, but will aid the transition to a post-money AI-assisted world because all will receive its benefits.
Fifth.
We must work on the assumption that technology will eventually replace ALL human jobs.
Then we must shape and communicate a crystal clear specific vision of what we want our countries and world to look like.
Do we want tyrannical feudalism or automated luxury democracy?
A decentralized network of sovereign wealth funds delivering Universal Living Income and the benefits of AI to all would transform billions of lives.
What would we do if we didn’t have to work unless we wanted to?
We could all get back to averaging ten hours of sleep per night like we did before the invention of the lightbulb. (This will do wonders for world peace and mental health rates.)
We could all engage in far more exercise and sports to get fit and healthy and strong again.
We could finally have the time to take up enjoyable hobbies like painting, poetry, drama, writing, experimental cooking and baking, wild swimming, hiking in nature, going to the sauna, gardening, farming, homesteading, etc.
Above all, we would simply spend more quality time with others.Â
Moms and dads could enjoy every moment of those precious, halcyon young years with their babies and toddlers.Â
Adult children could make the most of their beloved parents’ sunset years.
With unwanted work no longer in the way, friendships could flourish.
And, of course, we would all work!
We just wouldn’t do it for money anymore.
People love to work.Â
We get bored and lazy and apathetic and miserable when we don’t work.
We were made for work.
But when AI robots do all the necessary economic work, human work would return to its original intention — as a way for people to express themselves and to create and contribute meaning and value to society as a means of connecting with others.
If I didn’t have to work for a living, do you know what I would do?
I would continue to write books and make movies!
The only difference is that, instead of all of us having to work to sell stuff for money, we would simply give it away.
Writing a book or making a movie or performing music or standup comedy or a play or brewing beer will exist simply as a way to create and contribute a shared experience with others.Â
The work we will do will be for pure joy and pleasure, and we will give it away just like everybody else.
Picture a typical day in your future life:
11:00pm-9:00am Sleep ten hours and wake up naturally without an alarm clock, perhaps reading in bed for a sunny morning hour
9:00am-11:00am Sunny saunter/hike/jog/swim/sauna/adventure with family
11:00am-12noon Brunch with friends by the pool
12:00pm-1:00pm Nap (perhaps in a hammock by a pond)
1:00pm-5:00pm Work for pleasure, learning, personal expression, societal contribution, and human connection
5:00pm-6:00pm Play basketball or tennis, or perhaps take up dancing or a martial art
6:00pm-8:00pm A long leisurely candlelit dinner with friends and family (perhaps by a lake or seaside)
8:00pm-10:00pm Attend a movie, play, concert, stand-up comedy, debate, lecture, or author signing with friends.
10:00pm-11:00pm Read a book, all cozied up by the fire.
And that’s just Monday.
In conclusion
The clock is ticking.
Democratic leaders must re-iterate the threat and stakes of not doing these five things now.
On our current course, the enemies of democratic freedom (globalist finance, Russia, China, Islamic radicalism, etc) will dominate AI technology and weaponize it to turn humanity into serf colonies.
If democracies don’t take the lead now, we’re looking at a future of certain depression, likely subjugation, and possible annihilation.
But if we get this right, humanity could achieve something never seen before in human history: The global end of material need and environmental sustainability.
We stand on the brink of subjugation or extinction… or the greatest renaissance of all time.
Let’s choose human flourishing.
