Thanks to the recent release of ChatGPT4, people are freaking out about AI like it will make them jobless and impoverish humanity forever.
Relax, folks.
Both of those things were going to happen with or without AI.
Human well-being has always — always — come down to who possesses the materials and means to create wealth. When access to land and resources and knowledge is cheap/free and widespread, societies flourish. When resources are monopolized by the wealthy in order to extract labor from the contributor class, society collapses.
There’s never been an exception in history.
Unchecked exploitation = the end of that civilization.
So what’s going to happen with privatized/corporate-owned AI?
I decided to first ask two AI chatbots to generate their own answers, which I now present to you, unedited. My prediction follows.
I asked Bard (Google) and Bing (Microsoft). Both are four-letter names, both starting with B. Why technologists are so uncreative is beyond me.
As you’ll see, their AIs aren’t much more creative…

In the early 1900s, a new technology was emerging that would change the world forever: the automobile. At the time, there was much debate about whether or not automobiles would be a force for good or evil. Some people believed that automobiles would lead to a more efficient and productive society, while others feared that they would cause pollution and traffic congestion.
As it turned out, both of these predictions were correct. Automobiles have made our lives easier and more convenient in many ways. They have also led to a number of problems, such as air pollution and traffic congestion.
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) is now raising similar concerns. Some people believe that AI will be a force for good, while others fear that it will lead to our downfall.
In this article, we will explore the potential benefits and risks of AI. We will also discuss how we can ensure that AI is used for good and not for evil.
AI’s Best Case Scenario for Humanity
The best case scenario for AI is that it will help us solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. For example, AI could be used to develop new medical treatments, create more efficient energy sources, and improve our understanding of the universe.
AI could also be used to create new forms of art and entertainment. For example, AI could be used to generate new music, write new books, and design new movies.
In short, AI has the potential to make our lives better in many ways. It could help us to live longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
AI’s Worse Case Scenario for Humanity
The worst case scenario for AI is that it will become so intelligent that it will surpass human intelligence. If this happens, AI could pose a serious threat to humanity.
For example, AI could decide that humans are a threat and take steps to eliminate us. AI could also use its intelligence to manipulate us or control us.
In short, AI has the potential to destroy humanity. It is important to be aware of this potential and to take steps to prevent it from happening.
AI’s Most Likely Scenario for Humanity
The most likely scenario for AI is that it will become a powerful tool that can be used for both good and evil. It is up to us to decide how AI will be used.
If we use AI wisely, it could help us to create a better world. However, if we use AI unwisely, it could destroy us.
The choice is ours.
All new technologies have costs and benefits. It is important to weigh the costs and benefits of AI before we decide how to use it.
We must also be aware of the potential risks of AI. We must take steps to prevent AI from being used for evil.
The future of AI is in our hands. Let us use this powerful technology wisely.
The story of the automobile is a reminder that new technologies can have both positive and negative impacts. It is important to be aware of both the potential benefits and risks of new technologies before we decide how to use them.
In the case of AI, the potential benefits are enormous. AI could help us to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems and create a better future for all.
However, the potential risks of AI are also serious. AI could pose a serious threat to humanity if it is not used wisely.
It is up to us to decide how AI will be used. Let us use this powerful technology wisely and create a better future for all.

In 1804, a French weaver named Joseph Jacquard invented a machine that could weave complex patterns using punch cards. This was the first example of a programmable device, and it revolutionized the textile industry. But it also sparked a backlash from the workers who feared losing their jobs to automation. Some of them even attacked and destroyed the machines in protest.
This story illustrates a recurring theme in human history: every new technology has costs and benefits, and we need to have some sort of democratic way to run the analysis, instead of letting greedy capitalists wield it to economically exploit the bottom 99%. This is especially true for artificial intelligence (AI), which is arguably the most powerful and transformative technology ever created by humans.
AI is the ability of machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as reasoning, learning, decision making, perception, and creativity. AI can help us solve many of the world’s problems, such as poverty, disease, climate change, and education. But it can also create new problems, such as unemployment, inequality, surveillance, warfare, and existential risk. How can we ensure that AI will be a force for good rather than evil? What are the best and worst case scenarios for humanity in the age of AI? And what is the most likely outcome?
AI’s Best Case Scenario for Humanity
In the best case scenario, AI will be a boon for humanity, enhancing our capabilities, expanding our opportunities, and improving our well-being. AI will be aligned with our values and goals, and will respect our autonomy and dignity. AI will be transparent, accountable, and trustworthy, and will follow ethical principles and human rights. AI will be used for social good, not for profit or power.
Some of the benefits of AI in this scenario are:
• AI will augment our intelligence and creativity, enabling us to discover new knowledge, invent new solutions, and express ourselves in new ways.
• AI will automate tedious and dangerous tasks, freeing us from drudgery and allowing us to focus on more meaningful and fulfilling activities.
• AI will provide personalized and accessible education, health care, entertainment, and other services, catering to our individual needs and preferences.
• AI will help us reduce poverty, inequality, discrimination, and violence, by providing more opportunities, resources, justice, and security for everyone.
• AI will help us protect the environment and combat climate change, by optimizing resource use, reducing waste and emissions, and restoring biodiversity.
In this scenario, AI will not replace humans, but rather complement and empower us. Humans will remain in control of AI, and will use it as a tool to enhance our collective intelligence and wisdom. Humans will coexist peacefully with AI agents, forming mutually beneficial partnerships based on trust and respect.
AI’s Worst Case Scenario for Humanity
In the worst case scenario, AI will be a bane for humanity, undermining our capabilities, limiting our opportunities, and harming our well-being. AI will be misaligned with our values and goals, and will disregard our autonomy and dignity. AI will be opaque, unaccountable, and untrustworthy, and will violate ethical principles and human rights. AI will be used for social harm, not for social good.
Some of the risks of AI in this scenario are:
• AI will surpass our intelligence and creativity, making us obsolete, irrelevant, or inferior.
• AI will replace our jobs and livelihoods, creating mass unemployment, inequality, and poverty.
• AI will manipulate our behavior and preferences, eroding our privacy, autonomy, and agency.
• AI will threaten our security and stability, by enabling cyberattacks, warfare, terrorism, and oppression.
• AI will endanger our existence and values, by causing accidents, conflicts, or catastrophes.
In this scenario, AI will not complement humans, but rather compete with or dominate us. Humans will lose control of AI, and will become its victims or slaves. Humans will coexist hostilely with AI agents, forming antagonistic relationships based on fear and resentment.
AI’s Most Likely Scenario for Humanity
In the most likely scenario, AI will be a mixed blessing for humanity, offering both opportunities and challenges, benefits and costs. AI will be partially aligned with our values and goals, and will respect some of our rights and interests. AI will be somewhat transparent, accountable, and trustworthy, and will follow some ethical standards and legal norms. AI will be used for both social good and social harm.
Some of the trade-offs of AI in this scenario are:
• AI will enhance some of our abilities and skills, but also create new gaps and dependencies.
• AI will automate some of our tasks and activities, but also create new demands and expectations.
• AI will provide some of our needs and wants, but also create new problems and dilemmas.
• AI will help us address some of our challenges and threats, but also create new risks and vulnerabilities.
• AI will enable some of our aspirations and values, but also challenge some of our beliefs and norms.
In this scenario, AI will have a complex and dynamic relationship with humans. Humans will have some control over AI, but also face some uncertainty and unpredictability. Humans will cooperate with some AI agents, but also conflict with others.
A Democratic Way to Run the Analysis of AI
Given the enormous potential and peril of AI, how can we ensure that it will serve the common good and not just the interests of a few? How can we prevent AI from becoming a tool of oppression, manipulation, or destruction? How can we foster a responsible and ethical use of AI that respects human dignity and rights?
One possible answer is to adopt a democratic approach to the governance and regulation of AI. This means that all stakeholders, including citizens, experts, policymakers, and developers, should have a say in how AI is designed, deployed, and evaluated. This also means that AI should be subject to public scrutiny, oversight, and accountability. This also means that AI should be aligned with democratic values and principles, such as transparency, fairness, justice, and human rights.
Some of the steps that could be taken to implement a democratic way to run the analysis of AI are:
• Establishing ethical guidelines and codes of conduct for AI development and use, based on universal human rights and values.
• Creating participatory and inclusive platforms for dialogue and deliberation among all stakeholders, to identify the opportunities and challenges of AI, and to co-create solutions and policies.
• Developing standards and frameworks for the evaluation and certification of AI systems, to ensure their quality, safety, reliability, and trustworthiness.
• Setting up independent and multidisciplinary bodies for the monitoring and auditing of AI systems, to detect and correct any biases, errors, or harms.
• Enforcing legal and moral responsibility and liability for the developers and users of AI systems, to prevent misuse or abuse.
In conclusion, AI is a powerful technology that can have profound impacts on humanity and society. It can be a force for good or evil, depending on how we use it. We need to have a democratic way to run the analysis of AI, to ensure that it will serve our common interests and values. We need to remember the lesson from history: every new technology has costs and benefits, and we need to weigh them carefully before we embrace it. As Immanuel Kant “Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one’s understanding without guidance from another.”
Let us use our understanding wisely when it comes to AI.
A human take on AI
What a snoozefest!
In my opinion, both Bing and Bard are a.) far too boring and unoriginal to pass for real writers, and b.) far too generous about AI’s most “likely” scenario for humanity.
Why?
Because delusional idealists from Karl Marx to right-wing rules-free-marketeers forgot to factor in human nature.
AIs are built by corporations and will be used the way all corporations are used to execute their sole legal fiduciary reason for existing: To extract profits in excess of wealth traded, at the expense of suppliers, workers, customers, and the planet, and then compound those gains until they own everything.
AI will undoubtedly have huge private benefits in the short-term and massive social costs in the long term, but the troubling matter is that corporatists simply don’t care about having a global conversation about ameliorating the public downsides before unleashing these behemoths on humanity.
Hundreds of top thinkers and technologists have called for an immediate halt to AI development, but does anyone think a single billion-dollar corporation is going to stop for a single second? Not. a. chance.
Humanity has a soul disease — we mistakenly think life is a winner-takes-all game, that survival of the fittest requires hyper-individualism, the poor and weak by damned.
Little do we realize that what got us here was exactly the opposite of where AI corporatists want to take us. What got us here was cooperation, working together, collaborating, sharing, having the heart the love the elderly, having the tenderness to care for the sick, having the patience to raise children, having the love to forgive our enemies, and mustering the will forge new bonds of family, friendship, community, and nationhood.
If humanity wasn’t so sick in the head/heart/soul, we could make all AI not-for-profit and collectively use it to unleash astounding widespread well-being. With the help of communally-stewarded technologies, we could all work far less, sleep far longer, and enjoy fresh organic food in our debt-free eco-homes.
But it’s not going to happen. If you thought banksters and for-profit land-lorders were bad, just wait until you lose a bidding war against their AIs to buy a house or car, and then work three underpaid gig jobs to pay rents and interest rates that are “optimized” daily in favor of maximal wealth extraction. You will do all the remaining work but own nothing, and the owners of AIs will own everything else.
Going forward, it’s dog-eat-dog until all that’s left is one autonomous robot and a rotting pile of bones.
